10 Stevie Ray Vaughan Style Open String Blues Licks

10 Stevie Ray Vaughan Style Open String Blues Licks

In this lesson, I’m covering 10 licks in the style of Stevie Ray Vaughan. All of these licks are “open string” licks, meaning that they each include notes played with open strings. All licks are in the key of E, and use the minor pentatonic and blues scales.

SRV played licks like this often. Songs like Scuttle Buttin’, Voodoo Child, and Little Wing, all use these licks played way down on the neck with the open strings. These licks sound great when played right.

If you like the sound of these licks, you must practice them! Playing with open strings is way different than playing without them. Plus, when you play way down on the neck, the frets are farther apart, the fingering can be different, and the strings are harder to bend. All around, playing licks in this area of the neck are way more difficult So, again, you must specifically practice these types of licks if you want to get good at them.
